Sometimes your VPN app will run smoothly, then at other times it just won’t work and you don’t know why. And you try again and again… but before you call support, take a breath and look at these common VPN connection problems and the reasons behind them so you don’t tear your hair out.
Why does the app not start when I open it?
This can happen if your device is running other software simultaneously and cannot respond fast enough. Try closing any unused apps to take some load off and start the app again. If you just started up your device or you are running on an older operating system, your device may need a few minutes to warm up and get all your background programs up and running. You can also check these background programs and remove the ones you don’t need to run automatically upon start up. If none of the above works, check and see if you have the right app for your device and OS.
Why can’t the VPN connection fail?
If you are having trouble connecting to a server, first try a different one. From time to time server loads may cause temporary delays. If the app won’t connect at all, make sure that your internet connection is stable. If your connection is too slow, the app may have trouble contacting the server. If your connection looks good, there may be a communication problem caused by other applications accessing the internet. Close other programs connected to the internet and try again. If it still doesn’t work, try checking to see if you have any non-standard firewall configurations that are blocking the app.
Why does the app disconnect?
Check your connection again, and if you notice intermittent service, this is the problem. If not, try connecting to a different server to find one that works best for your location. If the app keeps disconnecting every few minutes, you may not have the correct version for your device. If none of this works, please contact your provider to help you fix the problem.
Why does the VPN connection speed yoyo?
A VPN will not slow down your connection, but speeds will vary depending on the reliability of your connection (check with your ISP about this) and the websites you are visiting. Remember that the data has to travel to the server you have selected, and if you are connecting to a server across the globe to a website back where you are located, it’s a long trip.
These are the most common VPN connection issues, but if you have other problems and your provider can’t help you or just does not have what you need, you’ll need to do a bit more research to find one that does. For one, we have known ExpressVPN to be excellent in the area of customer support.
